From the Academy to Pop Culture, our society is in the throes of change rivalling the birth of modernity out of the decay of the Middle Ages. We are now moving to the postmodern era. But what is postmodernism? How did it arise? What characterizes the postmodern ethos? Who are its leading advocates? Most important of all, what challenges does this cultural shift present to the church, which must proclaim the gospel to the emerging postmodern generation? Stanley J Grenz here charts the postmodern landscape. He shows the threads that link art and architecture, philosophy and fiction, literary theory and television. He shows how the postmodern phenomenon has actually been in the making for a century, also introducing readers to the contemporary gurus of the postmodern mindset. The Fabric of this World: Inquiries into Calling, Career Choice and the design of Human work. £7.50
Author(s): Hardy Catalogue number: G.1.260
The first section of this book is a survey of attitudes to work in western history-starting with the classical and mediaeval denigration of work under the ideal of the contemplative life. Hardy then goes onto show how the 16th century protestant reformers Luther and Calvin challenged this ideal by articulating the concept of 'calling' or 'vocation', giving a new sense of religious dignity to work. Contrasting with the modern secular tendency to either glorify or villify work, the Christian understanding of vocation regards our work as a participation in God's ongoing creative work through the responsible use of our gifts in the service of others. Hardy then looks at the issues involves in choice in career. The final section is a Christian critique of the management theories of F.W. Taylor, E Mayo, C Argyris, F Herzberg, D McGregor, PF Drucker and R Levering.

Author(s): Henderson Catalogue number: B.1.463
This is a lucidly written Free University of Amsterdam Ph. D .thesis (1994) published as a book. Herman Dooyeweerd (1894-1977) was a Dutch Christian philosopher who constructed a comprehensive and unique system of thought. This book deals with his first period of development between the years 1918 and 1928, examining the origin of his ideas and their connection with neo-Kantian and neo-Calvinist thought. This book explains both the growth and structure of Dooyeweerd's conceptual building blocks and how they were used to create a comprehensive system of philosphy. During these formative years he reflected on the meaning of law, trying to illuminate its significance for his own and for the other academic disciplines. Eventually he penetrated to what he believed was its deeper religious origin, providing a new understanding of law and the basis of a new approach to philosophy.

Author(s): Hendry Catalogue number: D.1.134
Since Kant, Christian theology has mostly focused on God and humanity, while the world of nature has been marginalised. This book discusses Kuyper's ideas in their context by providing a historical commentary on the book in which they received their most significant expression, 'Lectures on Calvinism' - a series of six lectures that Kuyper delivered at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1998.Kuyper's articulation of (neo) -Calvinism saw it as far more than a theology, rather it was a worldview that had systematic implications for the whole of life. In the words of one of Kuyper's slogans ' There is not a square inch of reality of which Christ does not say ‘It is mine!'.' Originating as an Oxford D.Phil. thesis this is the best book on Kuyper available...even Dutchmen are conceding this!!!

No - this is not a joke ! ( Nor was that wonderful book 'How the Irish saved civilisation'!) . It is written by a team of serious Christian mathematicians with Ph.D.s. It is another wonderful instance of what Professor George Marsden has called in the title of his book 'The Outrageous Idea of Christian Scholarship' (Oxford University Press, 1997).

'This is an interesting & well-researched book. It discusses a number of deep & important ideas & questions concerning mathematics & the philosophy of mathematics in a valuable & illuminatng way. The authors succeed admirably in exploring the interrealations between different perspectives on mathematics - perspectives from philosophy, history, the social sciences, constructivism & the Christian faith. This book achieves an original synthesis and concludes with a valuable multiperspectival position'. (Professor Paul Ernest, Exeter University).
